RE: What is your favourite place to summer/winter?

Hi, These all sound like wonderful destinations. Do ya'll work in your summer and winter locations? I'm an x-ray tech, not quite ready or financially able to retire yet. But hopping here and there wouldn't work for long on a resume. :) Trying to figure out a way to be able to afford this lifestyle before retirement.

RE: Travel nurses?

My wife and I are both radiographers and we would love the travel idea. We have no children and are free to go practically anywhere. We live in Florida and would be interested in traveling during our hot season. What it the best way to get started? Should we rent a vehicle first to see if it suits us or just jump in and buy one? We also have several pets that could go along. Thanks, R and K I found this site strictly for radiology travel jobs. http://www.xrayz4u.com/. You might want ot check it out!

RE: Travel nurses?

Hello Stormysmom, I'd recommend going ahead with your RN before hitting the road. I know one person who did that several years ago and the amount of money difference between an RN and the LPN was substantial. You would also be paying more for the "distance learning" especially if you have to do " clinicals" in an unfamiliar area. What's one more year at the house worth? Just mho. My DH is 65 and ready to hit the road NOW. So the LPN was a trade off. I know there's a huge pay difference between LPN and RN and I will probably apply for both programs since I am unsure. In my area in SW VA. RNs work in hospitals and LPNs work in doctor's offices. I really don't have much desire to go back to a hospital setting again. My preference would be an urgent care setting (that's where I'm working now as a rad tech) or home health care. Of course as I get into it more, that may change. Thanks for the tip on the Delphi forum. I'll check it out.

RE: What to do?

Yes, I actually DO have people here that I can ask about it, now that I thought more about it through this discussion. My son used to work for people who are in the process of establishing a "no kill" animal shelter for our county. Her and her husband have a large farm populated with dogs and cats awaiting adoption. Talking to her might be my first step. We're not ready to leave on our adventure yet anyway. It will be spring of 09 before we can go. I'm going back to school for a year for nursing, now that we are empty nesters. My DH is ready to retire, but I am not. The one year LPN program was a compromise because I really am headed to RN, but can go from LPN to RN mostly online/on the road. We live in SW Virginia, not far from the Blue Ridge Parkway...Roanoke. Beautiful country here. Enjoy your first taste of the fulltime life, Barb. Thanks for your comments everyone.

RE: Travel nurses?

Hiya, You might research the companies that offer travel jobs for x-ray folks. Most of the job listings I've seen for travel radiology jobs are very specialized positions in places that may or may be attractive to you....even temporarily. JMHO :)

RE: Travel nurses?

Hello, I am a registered x-ray tech actually beginning school for an LPN. Are there also travel nurse jobs available for LPNs? I plan on continuing for my RN while on the road through distance learning, (Excelsior?) I have most of my general credits for the Associates for my RN, but don't want to spend the additional year tied to my sticks and bricks. My husband is retired and ready to go..so an additional year for the LPN program was a compromise. Thanks..

RE: What to do?

No, Sher, we are not taking any cats with us. I am actually very allergic to cats. So a confined space like an RV would be intolerable. Right now I consider my cats indoor/outdoor cats. They are outside 90% of the time...but come into our large bathroom on winter nights.

What to do?

Hello, We are contemplating the Fulltime lifestyle and would be taking our 2 dogs. But in the past couple of years my cat population has gone from 2 neutered cats to 8 neutered cats. One lone kitten drifted into our life, followed by her sister a couple of weeks later. Both promptly delivered multiple cats. I have no plans on taking 8 cats with me on the road, but have no idea what to do with them. I love them all, but can't let the cats run my life choices. Help!

RE: questionnaire

Hello again, A few months back I posted a questionnaire with reference to fulltiming RVing. I was researching the topic for both my own benefit as well as for a college composition class. I promised that I would post the report when it was completed. If anyone would like to read the report please send me a private message with your off forum e-mail address. I can send it as an attachment in Word. The report is too large for this e-mail program. Thanks to all that replied. I received a grade of B. I thought I deserved an A.. :)

RE: Making the leap to Fulltiming

Thanks for all the replies so far. :) My dh is 65 and collects SS. I'm 56 and still work part time...not ready to retire yet. I'm concerned about the cost of this lifestyle (especially with the price of gasoline) and worry about where the money is going to come from. We also have acreage with a large yard that neither of us want to be bothered with anymore...and a house too big for our needs.

Making the leap to Fulltiming

For you folks that are already Fulltimers without a "sticks and bricks"....what was your leaping point into this way of life? Thanks.

Laptops

Hi, Does everyone that has computer access use a laptop? Does anyone take their entire PC and printer set up with them? I am computer addicted and do a LOT of desk top publishing, from greeting cards to business cards. I'd much rather take EVERYTHING with me if it's feasible. Thanks.

Best cell phone internet combo?

Hello, What do you think the best cell phone/internet access combo for someone who is ONLINE constantly, and uses the cell phone only as needed? And can this in anyway be connected to direct tv? At my sticks and bricks home, I currently access the internet with hughes.net as well as having direct tv. Thanks!

RE: it costs that much?

Fuel (1000 miles per month) Insurance, Taxes, Depreciation all add up big time... Everytime I add all this stuff up it comes to over 90K per year. Now we figure to start FT next fall at age 50 but we also figure to work at least 6 months a year at something we'll enjoy. DW and I both in the rat race biz world for past 30 years so time to play wine expert or wrangler or musician or workamper or whatever.... I know it won't pay well but at least we won't be spending when we're working... and maybe we'll even have some fun. If we can live a simpler life if we can find fun work if we remain healthy great if not.... well it's back to the grindstone OHMYGOODNESS. That's WAY over our budget! We both plan to work along the way as well...hopefully at something fun and different. Thanks for your post.

RE: questionnaire

Birddogman I suppose you understand what I'm talking about. No way I'd trade that for a tiny site in a campground; especially since I don't need to. I can travel in the moho or otherwise when I want; or enjoy my own place when I want; hunt/guide when I want (the other lawyers and staff can run the place just fine and I suspect few are unhappy if I stay away an extra week or two or three); and do interesting, well-compensated work when I want. Hard to beat that. Yes, I DO understand. Thanks so much for your post. You sound so much like my DH. He prefers dogs to most people! :B

RE: questionnaire

Today’s Date: 9/13/07 Your Name: Greg Your State: Pennsylvania 1. Do you own or rent your RV? Rent Own (Circle one): Own 2. How long have you owned this vehicle? Four years 3. What class of RV do you drive? Class A Length? 33” Make & Model : Winnebago Adventurer 4. Do you live in your RV full time? Yes No (Circle one): No 4a. If you answered no, why don’t you live in your RV full time? I use my RV as a sort of movable home when I want to go somewhere. I work part-time as an upland bird hunting guide, so it is common in the Fall and Winter for the dogs and I to be “camped” in remote areas doing our thing for weeks at a time – for example, we are leaving tomorrow for three weeks in places on the western high plains that are 25 miles from the nearest fence post. I also use it to transport my handicapped wife to visit one of our kids who lives out of town with her family. It is a convenience/tool to me, not a way of life. I would NOT want to live in it full time because I love my home and (especially) my land. We live deep in the woods, smack in the middle of a good bit of land. My “day job” is running (what is for here) a large commercial law firm I founded years ago and doing complex M&A legal work. It only takes me about 20 minutes to travel from the privacy and peace of my land to the challenge and excitement of my work. I could easily retire, but I enjoy what I do – the best of all worlds: (i) interesting, very well-paid, intellectually challenging work; (ii) hunting, guiding and traveling when ever and where ever I want for as long as I wish in the comfort of a Class A motorhome with its own Jeep and canoe for getting into the backcountry; and (iii) a beautiful, serene rural home with enough land to hunt, shoot, run the dogs, or just watch the wildlife and enjoy the peace without ever leaving my own property. Barring total disaster, I would never give that up to go live in a campground! 4b.Would you consider it at any time in the future? Yes No (circle one): No. If no, why not? I wouldn’t want to give up the above and have no need to do so. Besides, I do not like campgrounds and could not imagine spending the rest of my life in variations of that setting – awful!!. Campgrounds can be crowded; you must comply with all sorts of rules and I don’t take at all well to rules and authority; living so close to others exposes one to negative behaviors I have no desire to deal with; and, finally, campgrounds seem to be populated with busybodies (who are attracted to my friendly birddogs) who have nothing to do but wander around looking for others to talk at. When I’m traveling, I’m busy. Hunting or guiding all day, covering miles of rough terrain and thick cover – at night cleaning birds, getting ready for the next day, and pounding in five or six hours/day of legal work via cell, WiFi, or whatever. I don’t want to be stuck for hours listening to a stranger blather about his latest operation or her darling grandchildren. If you answered no to question #4, you have completed the questionnaire. Thank You so much for your time. I have included a stamped self addressed envelope for returning your answers to me. I would love the questionnaires returned by 10/1/07. Thank you so much. LOVED your response!! Gotta ask..How old are you? We live in a very rural area with a home on 19 acres. Nearby piece of property is 100 acres, just land no house. Not sure DH can live without the land and space.
